CROWNS AND BRIDGES

ZIRCONIA DENTAL CROWN

We are the best dental point in Los Algodones for your dental health

Dentistry is not only a science — it is also an art, and dental crowns are a perfect example of that. A crown, or “cap,” is a custom-made cover that fits over a damaged, worn, or unattractive tooth. It can even be used to completely replace a missing tooth as part of a dental bridge.

At Point Dental in Los Algodones, we offer experience and confidence in cosmetic treatments led by
Dr. Linzay Leyva, with over 15 years of experience, and
Dr. Gustavo Valencia, with over 17 years of experience,
both known for truly listening to their patients’ needs and providing high-quality care.

Dental crowns fully cover the tooth above the gum line. This differs from veneers, which only cover the front surface of the tooth and require sufficient natural structure to support them. Therefore, when a tooth has lost a significant portion of its structure, a crown is the ideal restoration.

Crowns strengthen damaged teeth, allowing them to return to normal function. When made with advanced materials like zirconia, they are virtually indistinguishable from natural teeth — and can even be designed to enhance the original appearance.

In addition to zirconia crowns, we offer other materials depending on your needs. For example, cast gold is unmatched in durability, though it may not be the most aesthetic choice, especially for visible front teeth.

Placing a dental crown typically requires two to three visits.

During the first visit, the tooth is prepared to receive the new crown. This involves reshaping the tooth so that the crown can fit securely — often requiring some milling or contouring to create a uniform shape. If there is insufficient tooth structure, additional treatments may be necessary to rebuild and preserve the tooth.

Once the tooth is prepared, dental impressions are taken — either digitally or using high-precision materials — and sent to a dental lab. There, the impressions are used to create accurate models of your teeth, which allow our highly skilled dental technicians to design a crown that will enhance both your smile and bite function.

Before you leave the office, a temporary crown will be placed to protect your tooth until the permanent crown is ready. During the second visit, the permanent crown is bonded to your tooth with long-lasting dental cement.

Crowns can also be used to create a replacement for one or several missing teeth, giving a natural-looking result. This is done with a bridge, which spans the space left by the missing tooth or teeth.

The number of abutment teeth (the supporting teeth for the bridge) needed to replace the missing ones is determined by several factors:

  • The number of missing teeth

  • The size and length of the roots of the abutment teeth

  • The amount of bone support each abutment tooth has

  • The location of the missing teeth in the mouth

For example, if you have three missing teeth, it may be necessary to use four abutment teeth, creating a seven-unit bridge. The engineering and design of the bridge requires knowledge not only of how to replace teeth, but also of the biology of the gums and the supporting bone tissue.

Why the Procedure Is Performed

A crown or bridge may be used for the following reasons:

  • In the case of a bridge, to fill a space created by missing teeth

  • To repair a weak tooth and prevent it from breaking

  • To support and cover a tooth

  • To replace a deformed tooth or to restore a dental implant

  • To correct misaligned teeth

  • In cases of large cavities, where very little natural tooth structure remains to support a filling

  • A chipped or broken tooth

  • Worn or cracked teeth from grinding

  • Discolored or stained teeth

  • Misshapen teeth that don’t match your other teeth

Caring for Your Crowns and Bridges

Crowns and bridges require the same meticulous care as your natural teeth. Be sure to brush your teeth and floss between all teeth — both restored and natural — daily to reduce the buildup of dental plaque.

When you have crowns, it becomes even more important to maintain your regular dental cleaning schedule at the clinic. Avoid using your teeth as tools (such as opening packages).

If you have a habit of grinding your teeth, it is highly recommended to use a night guard to protect your teeth — and your investment.
